Once again the open race track at Zurich-Oerlikon became the venue for the 2nd event of CSI Zurich called “Highlights” from the 6th to 9th July the following year.
This year they added 5 more riders to once again set new standards in showjumping. They wanted to continue to thrill the spectators with showjumping combined with entertainment, which this year featured riding artists from Hungary: The Hungarian Csikos, mounted shepherds in the puszta, which has an old tradition of special stunts with horses.
Their trip from Hungary to Switzerland met with problems as they did not have the required documentation at the Swiss border.
When they eventually arrived in Zurich, new troubles awaited them. The presentation of stunts were not satisfactory to the organizers of CSI & a Swiss director was called in to train them at night & to present to 25,000 spectators perfect stunts as well as pentathlon athletes from Zurich & Munich. No one mentioned how many litres of beer were necessary in advance for the “Schuhplattler” from Bayern to perform with the Swiss “Geisslechlepfern”.
The main challenge turned out to be a British Festival with 250,000Sfr for the European Classic. John Whitaker with Milton, best of 5 riders after the jump-off.
Positions 4 & 5, Britain’s Michael Whitaker with Mon Santa & David Broone with Queensway Lannegan. Best Swiss were Walter Gabathuler with Landlord & Rudolf Letter with Cartier at 9th & 10th. Riders showed outstanding performances on Saturday. Olympic champion in the national rankings, Franke Sloothaak (Germany) with Waltz King won the Grand Prix of 15,000 sfr, 2nd David Broone(Gb) with Queensway Lannegan, 3rd US rider Lisa Tarnopol with Adam Fourth & Swiss Champion Willi Melliger with Corso was placed 4th.
