In the fifth year of its existence, CSI now…..a 5-Star event! From 26th to 29th March, the best CSI ever! “Realistically this CSI could hardly be outdone!” noted brothers Rolf & Urs Theiler. Other tournament organizers had to attract the best riders in the world with start funds for participation. These two brothers could only smile….once more they remained on top with 500,000 Sfr prize money & won the race with the best in the world participating in Zurich. 44 riders from 13 nations.
Among these were several Olympic champions, World & European Champions as well as the complete 18 Swiss Top Equestrians.
For the first time, two illustrious names appeared on the starting list: Eric Navet, the French World & European champion with his stallion Quito de Baussy, and Twice Olympic Military Champion, New Zealander Mark Todd who became the most successful showjumping tournament rider.

The King’s Troop from London choreographed magnificently in their furious “Musical Drive”. The world’s most famous Dressage team from Germany presented a special Olympic Quidrille, and it was the first performance of Christine Stückelberger with her new horse Swarofski Diamond, a 9 year old Oldenberg.

The Dutch Rider Jan Tops, the only one to finish the jump-off without error won the main challenge, the European Classic in front of 8,120 spectators. Franke Sloothaak, winner of the previous year’s classic was 2nd with Walzerkönig & John Whitaker 3rd with Milton. Lesley Mc Naught Mändli was best Swiss Equestrian with Pirol in 7th rank. On Friday, Willi Melliger, with 3 seconds too slow,missed his chance as First Swiss Equestrian to win in the Grand Prix in the second jump-off to winner Eric Navet with Quito de Baussy and prize money of 15,000 Sfr. John Whitaker on Milton was placed 3rd.
