A Visit from the Royal House
The 8th CSI held on from March 23rd to 26th started with disturbing news for Rolf & Urs Theiler. Paul Weier, the course builder, in an accident with a horse was in hospital with fractured ribs & a lung problem - 3 weeks before the event! For the brothers it was highly imperative to have an experienced course builder like Weier on this project. One year before the Olympic games in Atlanta, it was necessary to raise the level of difficulty for the riders to the Olympic dimensions. Theoretically, no problem but practically they needed the experience of Weier. Fortunately the indestructible 60yr old recovered in no time to assume his duty at CSI.
To improve the conditions for the horses, Rolf & Urs invested 150,000 Sfr in a new course base. This comprised a mixture of sand & other components by Hermann Cuckek. A traditionally strong field of starters announced their participation.
13 Nations with 15 of the top 20 world ranked riders. Prize money 600,000 Sfr, a spectator attendance of 39,800 saw 4 wonderful days in Hallenstadion. The first appearance of the Household Cavalry - mounted bodyguards of the Queen - the most noble, oldest & only Guards Regiment in the British Army, demonstrated a superb & extraordinary skill in the "Musical Ride". Precision & discipline, a stupendous demonstration to an awestruck audience! On Sunday, the show was completed with a special act: John Whitaker’s "White Giant", Milton was bestowed with a very special lap of honour by an elated audience!
