The 20 year Anniversary of Mercedes-CSI
From January 24 to January 27 2008, Mercedes-CSI celebrated its superb birthday party: high-level sporting achievements including a brand new and innovative challenge, a modern show and a new spectator record emphasized the importance of Mercedes-CSI as an advertising platform for the horsesport.
Already in the run-up to the anniversary meeting a large success could be reported: Mercedes-Benz signed a 5 year contract as title sponsor. In May 2007 the new Mercedes-CSI logo was launched during a media conference in the riding school of Bruno Isliker in Winterthur. Since the inception of CSI in 1988, Mercedes-Benz has been involved as a sponsor. Karl Schregle, CEO of DaimlerChrysler Switzerland enthusiastically welcomes this cooperation: “Our partnership is based on values of tradition, innovation and quality. Mercedes-Benz and CSI Zurich represent these characteristics and therefore this outstanding match.
44’200 spectators, a new record at the 20th anniversary of CSi . The executive board welcomed spectator number 750’000 (in the 20 years)on Sunday: Martina Zimmermann from Wil (ZH). was awarded an invitation to the VIP tent by the organizing committee.
The first highlight commenced on Thursday, with a media conference relating to the importance of major sporting events in Switzerland for the Swiss economy as well as the Swiss society. This event, led by Rolf Theiler, President of Swiss Top Sport was organized by the Swiss Federal Office for Sports, Swiss Olympic and Swiss Top Sport. 500 influential personalities from politics, economics and the sport as well as the media, attended this significant conference.
The Emmi Kaltbach Challenge, where the Young Swiss Riders compete against the best equestrians in the world, is “the perfect platform for the Swiss Young Riders to prove themselves, and we were paid numerous compliments for this challenge!” informs Rolf Theiler, President of CSI and in charge of the sport.

The anniversary CSI started with top results for the Swiss equestrians. Markus Fuchs won the Credit Suisse Grand Prix. The Swiss Masters on Friday finished with a superb surprise. Alvaro Miranda, husband of Athina Onassis, finished the jump-off with a 1.5 seconds lead. 2nd was Steve Guerdat. The final fence was the decision maker at the Mercedes Classic on Sunday. Toni Hassmann and “Oldie” Hugo Simon lost the victory. The challenge was won by Edwina Alexander. The Australian amazon snatched the victory from the Swiss riders. Christina Liebherr was 2nd with Casanova. World Cup Champion Beat Mändli on position 5th, Pius Schwizer 6th and Niklaus Schurtenberger 8th.

The free of charge Expo and the warming-up area again has been an attraction to the public. The exhibitors gained record sales. “We could have enlarged the Expo area again, but there was no additional space available!” informed Urs Theiler.
